A book club usually consists of four or five people who gather weekly or bi-weekly to discuss a book.  There are a few typical book club questions that arise when someone first tries to organize a group.

The first hurdle to overcome will be where to find enough copies of the same book.  Most libraries won’t carry 5 copies of the newest best seller (even if they did, the best sellers will most likely be signed out).  What many book clubs are doing is joining a book of the month  style membership club.  Probably, the very best club is The Literary Guild because you start out with 5 books for only $.99 as a trial.  That’s perfect for most book clubs because you can either purchase 5 of the same book for each member at once, or have each member sign up and purchase the first 5 books to be discussed.  The Literary Guild has thousands of books to choose from at prices up to 50% off the MSRP.

The second issue for the organizer is figuring out what book club questions to ask.  Good questions should be centered around the chapters just read.  Why did the main character do this or that.  When will this secondary character become involved in the plot?  You can also ask questions about the author.  What other books do you enjoy from this author.  How is this book similar to the author’s other books.

Children should also be encouraged to read to join book clubs.  Because kids have short attention spans, you should choose books they will be interested in.  Dr. Seuss and Disney have great monthly book clubs.  Parents often have book club questions before signing up.  There are some great deals on the Dr Seuss and Friends Book Club and the Disney Book Club.  The best deals I’ve seen come with 2 free books, a tote bag, back seat organizer, and very discounted extra books.
