Night vision hidden camera

Hidden Camera manufacturers love low lux ratings, but consumers may be left in the dark. You’ve seen the claims: “Night vision” or “Outstanding reproduction in low light conditions.” Night vision Hidden Cameras with low-lux ratings are the norm, and manufacturers seem intent on seeing just how low they can go. Claims of 2 lux, 1 lux, 0.75 lux and even 0.1 Lux are not uncommon.

What do these ratings really mean? What is a lux, and just how many do you need?

Simply stated, the lux is the metric unit for measuring the amount of light that falls on an object, and is the European equivalent of the British foot-candle (or lumen). Specifically, 1 lux equals the amount of light that falls on a one-square-meter surface that is one meter away from a single candle. 10 lux equals the amount of light produced by 10 candles one meter away. A hidden camera with a 1-lux rating claims to be able to produce an image by the light of one candle that is about three feet away from the subject. Many cameras on the market today can do just that. The problem is that the resulting image may be of very poor quality. When a manufacturer slaps a 1-lux rating on the side of its camera, it is giving a subjective opinion of what is an acceptable image. While the ratings are more uniform, objective and scientific than they have been in the past, what a given manufacturer considers “acceptable” is probably not up to the standards of the quality-conscious video grapher. A grainy, monochrome form is probably not what you had in mind when you purchased your night vision “low light” hidden camera. Also, since “acceptable image” is a subjective term, lux ratings will vary from one manufacturer to another. Brand X’s 2-lux camera may produce a noticeably better image than a competitor’s camera also rated at 2 lux. There’s no way to know without testing them both.

This is changing. The Electronic Industries Association (EIA) has created a new standard (EIA-639) that has wide industry support. This should remove the subjectivity from lux ratings and indeed many companies are already using the new EIA-639 standard. We are crossing our fingers that they will also start writing “EIA-639 Lux rating” on their boxes so we’ll know what to look for. Still Bill $21.9 Bill Withers was one of the singular musical artists of the 1970s; an African-American singer/songwriter, Withers embraced elements of soul and funk in some of this hits (most notably “Use Me”), but he also drew from gospel (“Lean on Me”), jazz (“Just the Two Of Us”), country (“Who Is He and What Is He to You”), and contemporary folk (“Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Grandma’s Hands”), and his music was marked by a simple but expressive emotional outlook and a warm sincerity in both his vocals and his songwriting. Withers was a major star in the 1970s, but by 1985 he’d grown tired of battling record companies for control of his music and wanted to step away from the footlights to live a quieter life with his family. Withers has rarely performed in public since, despite a continued interest in his music and the respect of his peers. Filmmakers Alex Vlack and Damani Baker are a pair of music fans who persuaded Withers to talk about his life and career on camera, and Still Bill is a documentary that offers an intimate portrait of a reclusive artist, as well as interviews and performances from musicians who love and respect his work. There are acoustic pianists who only want to play in a traditional piano trio consisting of piano, bass, and drums; there are trumpeters who stick to a trumpet-sax-rhythm section format and want nothing more and nothing less. Other improvisers, however, like having different combinations of instruments on different albums, and Joe Morris is a perfect example. The avant-garde guitarist has led a wide variety of groups over the years; Camera finds him leading a quartet that employs Katt Hernandez on violin, Junko Fujiwara Simons on cello, and Luther Gray on drums. And having a quartet that is 75-percent string instruments and 25-percent drums gives Camera slight hints of chamber music at times, although “slight” is the operative word. Camera has a bit of Euro-classical appeal, but there is no overlooking the fact that this is edgy, free jazz. Morris thrives on the abstract, and he thrives on a stream of consciousness approach. But for all its intellect, Camera also has a great deal of passion. Morris’ playing is quite focused on cerebral offerings such as “Evocative Shadow,” “Patterns on Faces,” “Angel of Incidence,” and “Reflected Object.” Saying that Morris’ playing is both stream of consciousness and focused might sound like a contradiction, but it isn’t. As outside and freeform as this 2010 session is, Morris obviously went into the studio knowing what he wanted, and he didn’t want to throw things up against the wall randomly and see if perhaps they might stick. Camera Camera $12.28 Renaissance’s Camera Camera is one of the all-time “Who do they think they’re fooling?” albums. Released in 1981 on former manager Miles Copeland’s unassailably hip label IRS Records, Camera Camera features suavely cool graphics on the cover (along with singer Annie Haslam in a flirty, kicky pose) and brightly colored clothes on the slimmed-down lineup. Seriously, have a gander at these clothes if you ever see a copy of this album: the old phrase “mutton dressed as lamb” does not even begin to describe the sight of the formerly sedate and certainly old-enough-to-know-better Michael Dunford and Jon Camp in patchwork pastels and black and white vertical stripes, respectively, and although Haslam is gorgeous enough to almost make it work, even she can’t pull off that hair, not to mention the ghastly nameplate necklace. So anyway, the whole idea is to make believe that Renaissance is a quirky new wave trio (hired hand keyboardist Peter Gosling and drummer Peter Barron aren’t pictured, possibly because there wasn’t enough of a wardrobe budget for them) and not the progressive rock mainstays they had been since 1972’s Prologue. Again, who do they think they’re fooling?Now comes the hard-to-believe part: Camera Camera is actually a surprisingly good record. 1979’s Azure d’Or had been a transitional attempt at reinvention, and it was a bit of a botch. After Haslam and Dunford took some time off to work with Gosling under the new band name Nevada (releasing two singles in 1980), that trio reformed with Camp as Renaissance and committed fully to a transformation in their sound. Wisely, Renaissance aren’t trying for the Spandau Ballet/Duran Duran side of the new wave market — they weren’t stupid enough to think they could get away with that — but the artier feel of Peter Gabriel’s third solo album and, most crucially, Kate Bush’s melding of new wave and art rock. The combination of Gosling’s piano and synthesizers with Haslam’s operatically-trained vocals sounds so close to Bush’s The Kick Inside era that one can only assume that this was the intention. Haslam even sticks primarily to the upper end of her impressive range, cementing the similarity to Bush’s bracing soprano. Although there are a couple of misfires, particularly “Jigsaw,” which takes an unfortunate feint towards rocking out (never this band’s forte), most of these nine songs are entirely successful blends of flashy new wave and the group’s traditional sound. In particular, the Camp-penned “Running Away From You” is the most successful attempt at a straightforward pop song the band ever managed, and the multi-part title track and the playful “Faeries (Living at the Bottom of the Garden)” are every bit the equal of some of Renaissance’s best earlier work. Best of all, the production (by the band) does not sound nearly as dated as many similar albums from its time, largely due to the avoidance of electronic drums and the fairly restrained use of synthesizers.
