Lacanian Psychotherapy with Children: The Broken Piano $23.99 In a groundbreaking integration of the work of Lacan, Winnicott, and Tustin, Catherine Mathelin reveals how a child’s symptoms can be a striking reflection of its parents’ unresolved conflicts. She shows how her patients’ art, much of it reproduced here, can communicate both initial anguish and progress in treatment, and draws on her experience of working on a neonatal unit to argue compellingly that a child’s mental health can be endangered even before birth. "This is a book hard to put down, filled with the most fascinating brief case vignettes of parents and children who live in worlds disconnected from each other, hoping for experts to heal their suffering." -Anni Bergman, coauthor of "The Psychological Birth of the Human Infant" |

Writing Children’s Books for Dummies $15.17 Everyone loves a children’s book. And many dream about writing one. But is it actually possible for an unpublished writer–armed with a good story idea and a love of kids–to write, sell, publish, and promote a book? Yes, it is Veteran children’s book publishing executive and author Lisa Rojany Buccieri and author Peter Economy show you how, in their incredibly useful 2005 first edition of "Writing Children’s Books For Dummies(R)." Buccieri and Economy begin by explaining the basics of the children’s book business, from the nuts and bolts of the various formats and genres–with helpful illustrations to aid you–to the intricacies of the book publishing market, a list of recent award-winning books, and a first peek into the particular mind set that writing children’s books requires. (Hint: Throw out the adult rules, and think like a kid ) Then the authors dive into the actual writing process itself, with tips on setting up a workspace, brainstorming great book ideas, researching the subject you decide on, even speaking with the sorts of kids you hope will eventually read the book. They show you how to create compelling characters and develop them in the manuscript; how to outline and write a plot "arc" of conflict, change, and resolution; how to master the difficult art of writing dialogue; and how to use active (rather than passive) language to keep your story moving along and interesting to young minds. Or, if you’re planning to write a creative nonfiction children’s book–on a topic such as science, nature, or a historical figure, for example–the authors include a chapter on this, too. Ready, set, go… it’s time to sit down and write Once you’ve finished your book, however, the process has only begun. Now you will refine, submit, and hopefully sell your manuscript. Here again, the authors of "Writing Children’s Books For Dummies" come through for you. They deliver solid advice on hiring an illustrator–or not; participating in workshops and conferences to learn the business and hone a story; finding an agent; and, finally, submitting the manuscript to publishers and–if you are successful–signing a contract. Along the way, the authors also include tips on handling rejection; a quick primer on the various editors in publishing houses (and how they work to make your book its best); and making a plan to publicize the book, including hiring a publicist if necessary. Like all For Dummies(R) books, "Writing Children’s Books For Dummies" highlights "The Part of Tens," which includes the Ten Best Ways to Promote Your Story and More Than Ten Great Sources for Storylines. And the ever-helpful Cheat Sheet includes Tips for Editing your Children’s Book Manuscript, Children’s Book No-No’s, Twelve Commandments for Writing Younger Children’s Books, and Tips on Promotion. From setting down that first word on paper to doing a successful publicity tour, "Writing Children’s Bo |

The Cambridge Guide to Children’s Books in English $7.48 The Cambridge Guide to Children’s Books is an alphabetized reference work providing a critical and appreciative overview of children’s books written in English worldwide. It is not a guide to "children’s literature" but has a wider task–to include any author, or illustrator, or work, believed by the editors to have made a significant impact on young readers, or to have in some way influenced the development of children’s books. In addition to the long-established traditions of children’s writing from Great Britain and the USA, the Guide covers the increasing range of successful children’s books produced in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, West Africa, and India; and the exciting renaissance in children’s books currently taking place in Ireland and South Africa. Reflecting the developing scholarly appreciation for the history of children’s books, The Guide gives due weight to children’s books from pre-Norman times, and acknowledges recent developments in publishing practices and in children’s own reading. Victor Watson is Assistant Director of Research, Homerton College, University of Cambridge. He has edited several volumes about children’s literature, including Opening the Nursery Door (Routledge, 1997) and Where Texts and Children Meet (Routledge, 2000). |

(I Want To) Come Home $54.44 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! “I Want to Come Home” is a song written and recorded by Paul McCartney for the 2009 film Everybody’s Fine. An early cut of Everybody’s Fine was screened for McCartney, with Aretha Franklin’s cover of “Let It Be” inserted as a place holder by director Kirk Jones. McCartney was inspired to write the song for the film after connecting with the protagonist, portrayed by Robert De Niro, a widower who “hits the road to visit his scattered children after they cancel a weekend gathering.” McCartney told USA Today, “I can very much relate to a guy who’s got older children, who happens to have lost his wife, the mother of those children, and is trying to get them all together at Christmas. I understand that.” After recording a demo version on cassette, McCartney received notes for the song from Jones requesting an intro for the song as opposed to its original “abrupt” start. McCartney then collaborated with the film’s music composer Dario Marianelli on orchestrations for the song “resulting in an intimate ballad with piano, guitar and spare strings.” |

168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think $25.95 There are 168 hours in a week. This book is about where the time really goes, and how we can all use it better. It’s an unquestioned truth of modern life: we are starved for time. With the rise of two-income families, extreme jobs, and 24/7 connectivity, life is so frenzied we can barely find time to breathe. We tell ourselves we’d like to read more, get to the gym regularly, try new hobbies, and accomplish all kinds of goals. But then we give up because there just aren’t enough hours to do it all. Or else, if we don’t make excuses, we make sacrifices. To get ahead at work we spend less time with our spouses. To carve out more family time, we put off getting in shape. To train for a marathon, we cut back on sleep. There has to be a better way-and Laura Vanderkam has found one. After interviewing dozens of successful, happy people, she realized that they allocate their time differently than most of us. Instead of letting the daily grind crowd out the important stuff, they start by making sure there’s time for the important stuff. They focus on what they do best and what only they can do. When plans go wrong and they run out of time, only their lesser priorities suffer. It’s not always easy, but the payoff is enormous. Vanderkam shows that it really is possible to sleep eight hours a night, exercise five days a week, take piano lessons, and write a novel without giving up quality time for work, family, and other things that really matter. The key is to start with a blank slate and to fill up your 168 hours only with things that deserve your time. Of course, you probably won’t read to your children at 2:00 am, or skip a Wednesday morning meeting to go hiking, but you can cut back on how much you watch TV, do laundry, or spend time on other less fulfilling activities. Vanderkam shares creative ways to rearrange your schedule to make room for the things that matter most. 168 Hours is a fun, inspiring, practical guide that will help men and women of any age, |

A Classical Christmas: Piano Solos $14.99 Sparkling arrangements in the popular “classics combined with carols” format – delightfully styled by Emily Tufenkjian. Teachers and students will appreciate the careful attention given to fingering markings. Moderate in difficulty, this collection will be an attractive “quick read” for the accomplished pianist and an enjoyable challenge for the developing player. Performers and listeners will enjoy the thematic cohesiveness of such arrangements as “Silent Night” combined with Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” and “Away in a Manger” combined with Brahms’ “Lullaby.” The classically-aware listener will perceive the subtle irony in the combination of “O Come, Little Children” and Humperdinck’s “Hansel and Gretel.” Contents: Angels from the Realms of Glory (with Bach’s “Gavotte” and Pachelbel’s “Canon in D”) • Away in a Manger (with Brahms’ “Lullaby”) • Christ Was Born on Christmas Day (with Handel’s “He Shall Feed His Flock” from The Messiah) • Hark! The Herald Angels Sing (with Tchaikovsky’s “Russian Dance” from The Nutcracker Suite) • March of the Kings (with Bach’s “Musette”) • O Come, Little Children (with Humperdinck’s “Hansel and Gretel”) • O Come, O Come, Emmanuel (with Chopin’s “Prelude in E Minor, Op. 28 No. 4″) • Silent Night (with Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata”) • The First Noel (with Bach’s “Minuet”) • We Three Kings (with Mozart’s “Symphony 40 in G Minor, 2nd Movement”) • What Child Is This? (with Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade”). |

A Few Things I’ve Noticed $12.95 “Our children go to a progressive school which I’m beginning to think means a school that will progressively drive their parents out of their minds.”All of the essays in A Few Things I’ve Noticed have one thing in common–Madora Kibbe’s humorous slant on modern family life. Whether it’s the momentous purchase of a first pet, the pros and cons of children’s piano recitals, the irksome lack of desks in today’s elementary schools, or just the simple pleasure of hanging clothes to dry on a clothesline, Madora Kibbe finds fun in the smallest details of everyday doings. These essays are short and to the point, a Polaroid picture of the way we are, or should be. A mostly flattering picture too. No red eyes or goofy grins. See if you recognize anyone you know in this written collection of snapshots. |

A Fortunate Age $15 Instantly compelling and immensely satisfying, A Fortunate Age details the lives of a group of Oberlin graduates whose ambitions and friendships threaten to unravel as they chase their dreams, shed their youth, and build their lives in Brooklyn during the late 1990s. There’s Lil, a would-be scholar whose wedding brings the group back together; Beth, who struggles to let go of her old beau Dave, a onetime piano prodigy trapped by his own insecurity; and Emily, an actor perpetually on the verge of success— and starvation—who grapples with her jealousy of Tal, whose acting career has taken off. At the center of their orbit is wry, charismatic Sadie Peregrine, who coolly observes her friends’ mistakes but can’t quite manage to avoid making her own. As they begin their careers, marry, and have children, they must navigate the shifting dynamics of their friendships and of the world around them—from the decadent age of dot-com millionaires to the sobering post–September 2001 landscape. Smith Rakoff’s deeply affecting characters capture a generation. |

A Good Start in Life: Understanding Your Child’s Brain and Behavior $22.95 We all want to do the best we can for our children. Nature has equipped us with an instinct to protect and nurture. Unfortunately, we have not been provided with universal rules of parenting, and so we look to experts to fill that void. But there’s so much information out there — and half of it appears to be filled with contradictory advice while the other half is mired in scientific jargon that most parents have trouble deciphering. This is especially true of the data on the intricate workings of the developing brain. It’s a daunting task to figure out just what a parent should do. The key is to listen carefully to what science is telling us. Finally, we have a sensible guide to interpret the information in straightforward and practical ways.Dr. Norbert Herschkowitz, a Swiss pediatrician and neuroscientist, and his wife, Elinore Chapman Herschkowitz, an American educator, have teamed up to write this warm, friendly book to guide parents through the formative years of their child’s life. With a specific focus on the brain, they follow the path of early childhood development from gestation to age six years. Each chapter deals with a particular phase of development. They begin with Life in the Womb — What Are You Doing in There? and Newborn — Here I Am! As parents add candles to the birthday cake, new chapters prepare them for what lies ahead. Best of all, each chapter is accompanied by a section called, To Think About. . . . These sections address practical topics such as good-night rituals, testing limits, coping with conflict, reading books together, the value of piano lessons, evaluating day-care options, and encouraging why questions.Although there are scores ofbooks that deal with early childhood development, few — if any — so artfully combine solid, reliable science with logical, clear-cut information and advice. Parents need no longer worry about missing special windows of learning opportunity. They don’t have to deal with lingering doub |

A Life’s Morning $36.84 So Miss Hood — Emily, as she was called by the little group of people away in Yorkshire, to whom she was other than a governess; Emily; as we will permit ourselves to call her henceforth — always had the meal of tea with the children. After half-past eight in the evening she had it to herself, and there she passed many an hour of quiet content, playing softly on the piano, reading, dreaming. |
