Number $56.48 Number is the most underestimated of the grammatical categories. It is deceptively simple yet distinctions in number (as in cat versus cats ) vary considerably from language to language. Some languages, for instance, make more distinctions than English, having three, four or even five different values. This book draws on examples from many languages to analyze the possibilities and reveals that the world’s linguistic resources are richer than even many linguists realize. It is intended for linguistic students and teachers and is an ideal entry to linguistic typology. |

Number in Scripture $44.48 Six hundred and sixty six is "the number of a name." When the name of Antichrist is known its gematria will doubtless be found to be the number 666. 22.95 22.95 22.95 This may be the most famous number in the Bible, but it is by no means the only number to be found therein. Number in Scripture provides a complete and exhaustive synopsis of the spiritual significance of every number found in the Bible. This classic reference book on biblical numerology is one of the most famous and helpful reference books on numerology ever written. E. W. EC Number $43.98 The Enzyme Commission number (EC number ) is a numerical classification scheme for enzymes, based on the chemical reactions they catalyze. As a system of enzyme nomenclature, every EC number is associated with a recommended name for the respective enzyme.Strictly speaking, EC numbers do not specify enzymes, but enzyme-catalyzed reactions. If different enzymes (for instance from different organisms) catalyze the same reaction, then they receive the same EC number. By contrast, UniProt identifiers uniquely specify a protein by its amino acid sequence. |

Number and Numbers $21.98 The political regime of global capitalism reduces the world to an endless network of numbers within numbers, but how many of us really understand what numbers are? Without such an understanding, how can we challenge the regime of number? In Number and Numbers Alain Badiou offers an philosophically penetrating account with a powerful political subtext of the attempts that have been made over the last century to define the special status of number. Badiou argues that number cannot be defined by the multiform calculative uses to which numbers are put, nor is it exhausted by the various species described by number theory. Drawing on the mathematical theory of surreal numbers, he develops a unified theory of Number as a particular form of being, an infinite expanse to which our access remains limited. This understanding of Number as being harbours important philosophical truths about the structure of the world in which we live. In Badiou’s view, only by rigorously thinking through Number can philosophy offer us some hope of breaking through the dense and apparently impenetrable capitalist fabric of numerical relations. For this will finally allow us to point to that which cannot be numbered: the possibility of an event that would deliver us from our unthinking subordination of number. |

So when Dad brings home the company’s newest truck one steamy hot afternoon, Nancy, her brother and sister are hopping with excitement. Number 21 is big, red and beautiful. It shines so brightly, the kids can see their reflections on the cab door. And inside it’s perfect – the radio plays Dad’s favourite country music, and the horn has a blast that is pure joy. Even the glove box has three chocolate bars in it. But Number 21 is more than beautiful. Dad pulls out the garden hose, throws it over the side of the dump box, and soon the truck is a swimming pool When the perfect afternoon is over, Dad backs the new truck into the gravel lane and pulls on the hoist. As the box slowly begins to tilt, Number 21 has one more surprise in store. |

Number Theory $59.98 From the reviews: .,."a fine book … treats algebraic number theory from the valuation-theoretic viewpoint. When it appeared in 1949 it was a pioneer. Now there are plenty of competing accounts. But Hasse has something extra to offer. This is not surprising, for it was he who inaugurated the local-global principle (universally called the Hasse principle). This doctrine asserts that one should first study a problem in algebraic number theory locally, that is, at the completion of a vaulation. Then ask for a miracle: that global validity is equivalent to local validity. Hasse proved that miracles do happen in his five beautiful papers on quadratic forms of 1923-1924. … The exposition is discursive. … It is trite but true: Every number-theorist should have this book on his or her shelf." (Irving Kaplansky in Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society, 1981) |

Paint by Number $6.98 What is the fascination of paint by numbers? Is it the intoxicating and compulsive act of filling in small pools of color? Or the easy thrill of creating your own impressionist masterpiece? Or a fond nostalgic yearning for a craze that cut across national boundaries and age groups? Invented in 1951 by Dan Robbins-based on an idea used by Leonardo da Vinci to teach painting-the paint-by-number craze reached its zenith in the 1950s but continues even today as paints and kits are avidly collected, exhibited in galleries, and traded on eBay. In Paint By Number, author Larry Bird takes us on an unbelievable journey where art meets kitsch and popular and high cultures collide in a collage of home economics, leisure time fun, and art education, Bird revisits the hobby from the vantage point of the artists and entrepreneurs who created the popular paint kits, the critics who reviled them, and the consumers who enthusiastically filled them in and hung them in their homes. Paint By Number includes over 200 examples of paint-by-number ephemera and two pull-out paintings ready to be filled-in |

Lenin and Books $20.48 Man has worshiped books from time immemorial – "the greatest wonders of all the wonders created by mankind" – to use Gorky’s true words. Lenin said that books were a tremendous force. The catalogue of Lenin’s private library in the Kremlin lists more than 8,400 titles. And these undoubtedly represent but a small fraction of the total number of books and other publications that interested Lenin in the course of his life. Lenin’s writings include many documents of the greatest interest relating to books – articles, letters, critical reviews, surveys of books, speeches, notes, directives, etc. About 900 books, magazines and newspapers with Lenin’s marks on them have been collected in the Institute of Marxism-Leninism. These all contain his profound thoughts on the social character of books and the part they play in the life of society, his comments on individual writers, judgments on particular books, advice to book publishers, suggestions on the work of libraries, and so on. A rich memoir literature has been written about Lenin. Many of his contemporaries have told us of the way Lenin worked with books, what and how he read, what he thought of works of fiction and political and scientific books. Lenin’s own words and the reminiscences of him published in this collection will help the reader to get a better idea of Lenin as author of outstanding works of Marxist thought, research worker, editor, critic and reader. The materials are grouped under two headings: "Lenin on Books" and "Books in Lenin’s Life." Each part is prefaced by a short introductory commentary containing a brief outline of the contents and any necessary explanations. |

Think of a Number $3.98 An extraordinary fiction debut, Think of a Number is an exquisitely plotted novel of suspense that grows relentlessly darker and more frightening as its pace accelerates, forcing its deeply troubled characters to moments of startling self-revelation. Arriving in the mail over a period of weeks are taunting letters that end with a simple declaration, "Think of any number…picture it…now see how well I know your secrets." Amazingly, those who comply find that the letter writer has predicted their random choice exactly. For Dave Gurney, just retired as the NYPD’s top homicide investigator and forging a new life with his wife, Madeleine, in upstate New York, the letters are oddities that begin as a diverting puzzle but quickly ignite a massive serial murder investigation. What police are confronted with is a completely baffling killer, one who is fond of rhymes filled with threats and warnings, whose attention to detail is unprecedented, and who has an uncanny knack for disappearing into thin air. Even more disturbing, the scale of his ambition seems to widen as events unfold. Brought in as an investigative consultant, Dave Gurney soon accomplishes deductive breakthroughs that leave local police in awe. Yet, even as he matches wits with his seemingly clairvoyant opponent, Gurney’s tragedy-marred past rises up to haunt him, his marriage approaches a dangerous precipice, and finally, a dark, cold fear builds that he’s met an adversary who can’t be stopped. In the end, fighting to keep his bearings amid a whirlwind of menace and destruction, Gurney sees the truth of what he’s become – what we all become when guilty memories fester – and how his wife Madeleine’s clear-eyed advice may be the only answer that makes sense. A work that defies easy labels — at once a propulsive masterpiece of suspense and an absorbing immersion in the lives of characters so real we seem to hear their heartbeats – Think of a Number is a novel you’ll not soon forget. |

Number 87 $25.48 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER HI WHAT HAS DONE IT? It was the third evening after the introduction of Paul Strossmayer to our little circle, that poor Alexander Skeat had honored us with his company at dinner?and lectured us afterwards. For that is the only way to describe his minatory harangue. He treated us like a parcel of rather unsatisfactory children and, for my part, I doubted not that to his luminous and far-reaching mind the bulk of his fellow men appeared little removed from the immaturity of youth. Indeed we should have all conceded the point, if he had not been at such rather ill-bred pains to rub it in. As Bishop Blore said, "Most men know well enough that they are mediocre; but they resent being told so by superior and scornful strangers." I recollect that Mr. Skeat was troubled about the art of the country, and he cursed it in good set terms. Art was a subject whereon we were very willing to learn, and though General For- dyce, his brother and others paid no great attention, a dozen members?Jacobs and myself included?listened with interest and found the famous publicist convincing and suggestive. It was left for our latest comer, Mr. Strossmayer, to turn the monologue into a discussion when heasked civilly but pointedly, why Art, in the mind of the visitor, shut out all greater present demands and immediate needs. Skeat had just flouted Nature with hearty contempt. "If she can be personified in human terms, then only a lunatic would applaud her hideous manifestations," he said, "since she destroys with one hand what she creates with the other. To Art we must look for any rational interpretation of Nature, or human nature either." "But where are Art’s rational interpretations?" asked Strossmayer. "Surely art is dead, or shall we say in a state of suspended animation? … |

The Number 73304-23-4153-6-96-8 $23.48 Swiss horror master Thomas Ott returns with the first full-length graphic novel of his career. When clearing up the cell of a prisoner who has been sentenced to death and subsequently executed, a prison guard finds a small piece of paper with a combination of numbers on it. On the spur of the moment, he puts it into his pocket. As the guard lives a solitary, monotonous life, the numbers on the paper awake his curiosity. To find out their hidden meaning could add a new meaning to his life as well, so the guard stumbles into situations in which the number or part of it seem to achieve a certain importance and offer him hints and possible solutions. And the numbers signal a radical change in his luck. He gets to know a woman, falls in love with her, and one night, in a casino, he wins a huge amount of money when gambling on these numbers. But the next morning, the woman and money have disappeared. The man goes in search of the woman and the money. But from that day on, his luck changes and the numbers bring him only bad luck, sending him inexorably into an abyss that he might not recover from. Thomas Ott’s O. Henry-esque plot twists will delight fans of classic horror like The Twilight Zone and Tales from the Crypt, or modern masters like filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan; his hallucinatory, hyper-detailed scratchboard illustrations will haunt you long after you’ve put the book down. |

The Number Man $14.98 TOW TOW TOW It sounded nothing like TV. Nothing like the .25 revolver my mother used to shoot into the bedroom wall when I was three. TOW TOW He stepped back from the window, laid the gun down and pulled me down with him so we could crouch and check the damage. "We hit one those motherfuckers I thought we hit the other one but I don’t see his ass " "I don’t see him either." The sound of my voice must have brought him back because he looked me dead in the eyes, slapped leg and told me to pick up the shells. I was so caught up in the moment that I didn’t think about why he said "we." The one thing I did know was why he looked me in the face, he was looking for fear. I made sure he saw none. |

Closing the Books $69.48 Sitting on the terrace of the royal plantation Frederiksgave, his favourite retreat, Governor Edward Carstensen came to see the inevitable: Denmark had to give up her possessions in Africa. As fate would have it, he came to be the instrument by which two centuries of Danish involvement on the Gold Coast was terminated, thereby making way for the emergence of the colonial system that developed there. After the abolition of the slave trade, Denmark had struggled to find ways and means to legitimate her continued stay at the Coast. At an early stage the Danes initiated a number of attempts to establish experimental plantations to cultivate export crops such as cotton, coffee and sugar. But a transition from slave trade to legitimate products required stability and peace, and a need for control, which the rather limited Danish presence was not able to maintain. CLOSING THE BOOKS comprises a compilation of the official reports that the last Danish Governor sent home during his term of office at the Gold Coast. The reports reflect his personal views regarding the economic and political situations there, as well as his ideas on the "civilization of Africa." |

…Last Meal $12.95 A book of more than 40 photographs, Jacquelyn C. Black has created a powerful work focused on death row inmates and what they chose as their last meal before being executed. Combined with last words of the condemned, each left and right set of pages features a photo of the person and what they ate. Focused on inmates in Texas, among the photos and meals is that of Karla Faye Tucker. Some apologize for their crimes. Others cling to a claim of innocence. Background information such as education level and job at the time of arrest is often included, making the book an eerily disturbing work. Information about the death penalty is sprinkled through the book, from statistics on countries with the highest number of executions (the U.S. ranks third, ahead of Iran, Egypt and Saudi Arabia); to the statistic that 12 states do not have the death penalty; and that 10 of those have homicide rates below the national average. The sparse nature of the statistics and text leaves the photos of last meal to create a powerful emotional reaction.Jacquelyn C. Black grew up in Louisiana, Texas, and Tampa, Florida. She went to school at Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Her work has been exhibited in Boston and at the Alternative Museum in New York City where she currently resides and works as a freelance photographer. |
