Interaction and Grammar

Interaction and Grammar

$171.98

Many scholars of language have accepted a view of grammar as a clearly delineated and internally coherent structure that is best understood as a self-contained system. The contributors to this volume propose a very different way of approaching and understanding grammar: taking as their starting point the position that the very integrity of grammar is bound up with its place in the larger schemes of the organization of human conduct, particularly social interaction, their essays explore a rich variety of linkages between interaction and grammar.

Grammar Bible

A comprehensive, practical reference guide to the idiosyncrasies of the English language No one knows grammar like Michael Strumpf. For over a quarter of a century, as creator and proprietor of the National Grammar Hot Line, he helped thousands of callers from every corner of the globe tackle the thorniest issues of English grammar. Now, in "The Grammar Bible," he has created an eminently useful guide to better speaking and writing. Unlike other grammar manuals, "The Grammar Bible" is driven by the actual questions Professor Strumpf encountered during his years of teaching and fielding phone calls from anxious writers, conscientious students, and perplexed editors, including such perennial quandaries as o Where do I put this comma? o What case should this pronoun be in? o How do I form the possessive of Dickens? Professor Strumpf explains these and other language issues with wit and wisdom, showing how to speak more clearly and write more impressively by avoiding common errors and following the principles of good grammar. Whether you need a comprehensive review of the subjunctive mood or simply want to know which form of a verb to use, "The Grammar Bible" is a practical guide that will enlighten, educate, and entertain.

Pragmatics and Grammar

Pragmatics and Grammar

$148.98

When using language, many aspects of our messages are left implicit in what we say. While grammar is responsible for what we express explicitly, pragmatics explains how we infer additional meanings. The problem is that it is not always a trivial matter to decide which of the meanings conveyed is explicit (grammatical) and which implicit (pragmatic). Pragmatics and Grammar lays out a methodology for students and scholars to distinguish between the two. It explains how and why grammar and pragmatics combine together in natural discourse, and how pragmatic uses become grammatical in time.

Painless Grammar

Painless Grammar

$3.98

Most students and many teachers think of grammar books as being, at best, necessary evils–but here’s a book that breaks free from the pattern and takes the boredom out of grammar. Written primarily for children on the middle-school level, this book mixes parts of speech and proper punctuation with healthy portions of humor, down-to-earth examples, and fun illustrations that will appeal to adolescents. While kids are learning painlessly about how to make verbs agree with their subjects and pronouns with their antecedents, they look at some of the wackier words in the English language and see how they are often misused. A final chapter gives basic instructions for editing, which the author calls a fancy word for cleaning up messy writing.

The Uses of Grammar

The Uses of Grammar

$16.98

The Uses of Grammar takes an eclectic and accessible approach that integrates traditional, structural, and functional concepts with other ideas from contemporary grammar. In contrast with other grammar texts–which are typically organized from the "bottom up," beginning with parts of speech and progressing to phrases, clauses, and sentences–this book employs a unique structure based on the differentiation of form and function. This structure is framed around three questions: What are the forms in the grammar of American English? How do those forms function in that grammar? How are they used in real-life speaking and writing to achieve specific purposes? For example, students will learn how a variety of forms (including nouns, pronouns, verbals, and clauses) can all function as nominals. The Uses of Grammar incorporates examples and exercises that use "living language" to illustrate the practical applications of grammar. These sentences and passages are drawn from a wide variety of sources–including newspapers, magazines, books, and the writings of undergraduate students–and from such writers and speakers as Ronald Reagan, Shirley Chisholm, Groucho Marx, Mark Twain, and Jane Addams. Extensively class-tested and refined to be student- and instructor-friendly, the text also features "Challenger" and "For Discussion" boxed sections that enhance students’ understanding of the principles covered in the text and encourage classroom discussion. In addition, most chapters end with "Passages for Analysis" sections that allow students to analyze the uses of forms and functions in broader contexts than those provided by the exercises. An Instructor’s Manual that includes answers to exercises in the text, supplemental exercises and answers, teaching tips, an alternate table of contents, and a transition guide is available to adopters.
