Fantasy as we think of it started small and eventually blossomed through the hard work and contribution of many authors. Today, it has found its way into just about every medium you can imagine, the most popular of which are found in entertainment areas like movies and video games. Although the roots of Fantasy can be found far back in history, the literary genre itself has only been around for a relatively short period of time.
A large number of fantasy writers base their stories around magic and mystical settings. Fantasy literature is different from just about every other genre out there due to the fact that it incorporates supernatural phenomena and beings into the plots. Any strange, unusual, or otherwise “impossible” thing can find a happy home in the realm of fantasy, with talking animals, new dimensions and worlds, and even new laws of physics becoming the rule rather than the exception in many stories. Supernatural creatures such as vampires or werewolves often play a large role in many fantasy books and are often classified in their own sub-genre called dark fantasy. Most people also associate fantasy literature with magic, which is fair.
Not every fantasy story is based on strange, alien worlds. These stories tend to draw the lead characters into a hidden sub-world that exists as a part of, and yet remains separate from, our own world. Many take place in our own world with the strange and unusual, or supernatural, elements which make the story fantasy hidden for a large portion of the story.
Art based on fantastic creatures and worlds found in these stories is quite prevalent and can be found in many places, including the internet and books. Fantasy is versatile and can easily fit in both the adult world and the world of children. The popularity of books such as The Lord of the Rings by Tolkien, as well as a few other authors, have helped to propel fantasy into the spotlight. These stories, written expressly for adults, counteracts the idea that fantasy is should be restricted to the realm of childhood. These books have also helped to inspire new and interesting ways to interpret fantasy.
As new technology continues to be developed, it seems quite likely that fantasy will find a new and interesting way to adapt and find a way to keep growing in popularity. Popular games such as the “Final Fantasy” series, as well as World of Warcraft, EverQuest, and so on, have gained the attention of many people who might otherwise not be interested in fantasy. These games have millions of fans and players all around the world, and that seems unlikely to change any time soon. New games, such as Trion Worlds new MMO titled Rift, are constantly being developed and launched designed to take advantage of this vast fantasy market. Video games, television, and movies have been responsible for bringing the realm of fantasy into millions of homes around the world.

Rhetorics of Fantasy $22.61 Transcending arguments over the definition of fantasy literature, Rhetorics of Fantasy introduces a provocative new system of classification for the genre. Utilizing nearly two hundred examples of modern fantasy, author Farah Mendlesohn uses this system to explore how fiction writers construct their fantastic worlds. Mendlesohn posits four categories of fantasy–portal-quest, immersive, intrusion, and liminal–that arise out of the relationship of the protagonist to the fantasy world. Using these sets, Mendlesohn argues that the author’s stylistic decisions are then shaped by the inescapably political demands of the category in which they choose to write. Each chapter covers at least twenty books in detail, ranging from nineteenth-century fantasy and horror to extensive coverage of some of the best books in the contemporary field. Offering a wide-ranging discussion and penetrating comparative analysis, Rhetorics of Fantasy will excite fans and provide a wealth of material for scholarly and classroom discussion. Includes discussion of works by over 100 authors, including Lloyd Alexander, Peter Beagle, Marion Zimmer Bradley, John Crowley, Stephen R. Donaldson, Stephen King, C. S. Lewis, Gregory Maguire, Robin McKinley, China Mieville, Suniti Namjoshi, Philip Pullman, J. K. Rowling, Sheri S. Tepper, J. R. R. Tolkien, Tad Williams |

Fantasy City $64.39 Following a wave of de-industrialization and cutbacks in public spending, American downtowns are reinventing themselves in the image of Disneyland and Las Vegas. "Fantasy City" looks at the changing face of the city and what it means for its citizens and for the future of urban development. America’s central cities more and more begin to resemble theme parks. While this appears to have brought a new energy and hope to the urban landscape, it has yet to deliver an economic miracle to the surrounding residents and merchants. Local communities struggle to maintain their distinctiveness even as they embrace the commercial fantasies offered by global entertainment companies. John A. Hannigan shows how the growth of the fantasy city reflects an ongoing search for risk-free mass entertainment by middle-class consumers. By discussing examples from a wide variety of venues, including casinos, malls, heritage developments and theme parks, Hannigan traces the rise of urban entertainment at the beginning of this century, its decline after World War II to its surprising renaissance in the 1980s and 1990s. He offers provocative insights into urban development from structuralist, cultural and constructionist perspectives. By drawing on extensive material from business, cultural studies and urban planning, he shows that the growth of the fantasy city signals not only the arrival of a new urban space, but also the eventual destruction of the "inner city." |

A Short History of Fantasy $17.97 Some of the earliest books written – The Epic of Gilgamesh, and the Odyssey – are fantasy, dealing with monsters, marvels, extraordinary voyages and magic. Fantasy remained an essential part of European literature until the rise of the modern realist novel. But even then fantasy remained popular, in the guise of Gothic horror, the ghost story, the fairytale and stories of imaginary worlds: it was in part a reaction to the Enlightenment, to realism and to industrialisation. This book traces the history of fantasy from the earliest years through to the origins of modern fantasy in the twentieth century. From the 1950s (when Tolkien published The Lord of the Rings and Lewis published the Narnia books) the story is dealt with decade by decade. In the 1980s, fantasy earned its own section in bookshops in the English-speaking world and beyond, and by the end of the 1990s, fantasy writers such as Terry Pratchett and J.K. Rowling had become the best-selling writers in Britain, while Tolkien was a best-seller in all the major languages of the world. A Short History of Fantasy explores the great variety of fiction published under the heading ‘fantasy’ in the twenty-first century, and also seeks to explain its continuing and growing popularity. |

Dismantling the Fantasy $16.95 If you move into the deepest teachings of any great spiritual tradition, at some point you must move beyond the tradition itself and any idea of enlightenment. What is it that remains when the spiritual path, and even enlightenment, is transcended? Dismantling the Fantasy is a consideration of the movement out of thought itself. This may sound extreme or even impossible, but again it is a simple consideration of our potential, and you can easily understand it from the life experience you already have. Darryl Bailey was drawn to meditation at age fourteen, he spent the next seventeen years exploring awareness and concentration practices from Christian, Hindu, Sufi, Taoist, Buddhist, and Western psychology sources. He then spent a further nine years apprenticed to mindfulness teacher Ruth Denison and another six years as a Buddhist meditation monk in the Thai forest tradition, under the guidance of Ajahn Sumedho. In both situations he was asked to begin teaching. Along the way, there was recurring contact with the independent philosopher, Jiddu Krishnamurti, as well as a significant connection with the Advaita sage, Robert Adams. "I find Darryl’s writing refreshingly clean, crystal clear, unpretentious, simple, radical (to the root), and poetic. This is one of the finest books on non-duality I have come across." Joan Tollifson, author of Bare Bones Meditation and Awake in the Heartland |

‘Tinkers’: Synge and the Cultural History of the Irish Traveller $32.1 The history of Irish Travellers is not analogous to that of the ‘tinker’, a Europe-wide underworld fantasy created by sixteenth-century British and continental Rogue Literature that came to be seen as an Irish character alone as English became dominant in Ireland. By the Revival, the tinker represented bohemian, pre-Celtic aboriginality, functioning as the cultural nationalist counter to the Victorian Gypsy mania. Long misunderstood as a portrayal of actual Travellers, J.M. Synge’s influential The Tinker’s Wedding was pivotal to this ‘Irishing’ of the tinker, even as it acknowledged that figure’s cosmopolitan textual roots. Synge’s empathetic depiction is closely examined, as are the many subsequent representations that looked to him as a model to subvert or emulate. In contrast to their Revival-era romanticization, post-independence writing portrayed tinkers as alien interlopers, while contemporaneous Unionists labeled them a contaminant from the hostile South. However, after Travellers politicized in the 1960s, more even-handed depictions heralded a querying of the ‘tinker’ fantasy that has shaped contemporary screen and literary representations of Travellers and has prompted Traveller writers to transubstantiate Otherness into the empowering rhetoric of ethnic difference. Though its Irish equivalent has oscillated between idealization and demonization, US racial history facilitates the cinematic figuring of the Irish-American Traveler as lovable ‘white trash’ rogue. This process is informed by the mythology of a population with whom Travelers are allied in the white American imagination, the Scots-Irish (Ulster-Scots). In short, the ‘tinker’ is much more central to Irish, Northern Irish and even Irish-American identity than is currently recognised. |

…And the Angel with Television Eyes $1.99 “…And the Angel with Television Eyes” explores the region where fantasy meets reality. This surreal journey of self-discovery and transformation at once questions the nature of our world, and redefines it in the context of 21st century pop culture and technology. It takes a writer of John Shirley’s talent and audacity to bring together elements as disparate as Shakespeare, Nietzsche, on-line role playing games, soap operas, and classic mythology – binding them together, creating a heady melange on, above, and below the streets of Manhattan.”…And the Angel with Television Eyes” follows the life of Max Whitman, a successful, yet unfulfilled soap opera actor, as his life begins to fall apart. Strange, murderous events suck Max into a maelstrom that leaves him questioning first his own sanity, then the nature of reality. As he is dragged further into a battle between mythic forces that threaten to destroy him and his world, Max must first try and understand the nature of these forces and then find the strength to overcome them. At once a rousing adventure, and a bitingly insightful metaphor for our times, .And the Angel with Television Eyes is sure to keep you at the edge of your seat. |

1 Chronicles $98 Jarick reads Chronicles as fantasy literature that creates an imaginary world with the didactic purpose of inculcating a particular view of everyday life, bombarding the reader with a kaleidoscopic progression of heroes and villains and presenting a frontierland of danger and opportunity. 100 Days $100.99 100 Days by Sandor Tomin Sandor Tomin’s heroic anti-addiction odyssey will take you to a stunning world of realism that has been missing from today’s literature for decades. At a time when no best-seller can possibly be imagined without highly fictive sex, crime, fantasy scenes or secret codes, the author of 100 Days undertakes to simply document the events of his working days while giving up cigarette smoking in a remote corner of Western Asia. His unpretentious claim that he has only written a diary about quitting smoking is more than an understatement. As the journal unfolds, his natural talent for story-telling will turn stiff documentary into a plausible, fiction-like saga, real-life characters into novel-like heroes and plain, monotonous backgrounds into fascinating, meaningful landscapes. Mr. Tomin’s masterpiece is realistic but entertaining, loaded with everyday scenes that are sadly true but hilariously comical, written in a style that is politically correct and outrageously revealing at the same time. |

Chapters: 1741 Novels, Niels Klim’s Underground Travels, an Apology for the Life of Mrs. Shamela Andrews, 1741 in Literature, the Anti-Pamela; or Feign’d Innocence Detected, Memoirs of Martinus Scriblerus, Histoire de Dom Bougre, Portier Des Chartreux. Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Niels Klim’s Underground Travels, originally published in Latin as Nicolai Klimii Iter Subterraneum (1741), is a satirical science-fiction/fantasy novel written by Ludvig Holberg, a Norwegian-Danish dramatist, historian and essayist. It was his first and only novel. It describes a utopian society from an outsider’s point of view, and often pokes fun at diverse cultural and social topics such as morality, science, sexual equality, religion, governments, and philosophy. The novel starts with a foreword that assures that everything in the story is a real account of the title character’s exploits in the Underworld. The story is set, according to the book, in the Norwegian harbor town of Bergen in 1664, after Klim returns from Copenhagen, where he has studied philosophy and theology at the University of Copenhagen and graduated magna cum laude. His curiosity drives him to investigate a strange cave in a mountainside above the town, which sends out regular gusts of warm air. He ends up falling down the hole, and after a while he finds himself floating in free space. After a few days of orbiting the planet which revolves around the inner sun, he is attacked by a gryphon, and he falls down on the planet, which is named Nazar. There he wanders about for a short while until he is attacked once again, this time by an ox. He climbs up into a tree, and to his astonishment the tree can move and talk (this one screamed), and he is taken prisoner by tree-like creatures with up to six arms |

Chapters: 1786 Novels, Vathek, Anecdotes of the Late Samuel Johnson, Fabulous Histories, 1786 in Literature, Catalogue of Nebulae. Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Vathek (alternatively titled Vathek, an Arabian Tale or The History of the Caliph Vathek) is a Gothic novel written by William Beckford. It was composed in French beginning in 1782, and then translated into English by Reverend Samuel Henley in which form it was first published in 1786 without Beckford’s name as An Arabian Tale, From an Unpublished Manuscript, claiming to be translated directly from Arabic. The first French edition was published in 1787. A notable modern edition was issued in paperback by Ballantine Books as the thirty-first volume of the celebrated Ballantine Adult Fantasy series in June, 1971. This edition, edited by Lin Carter, was the first to incorporate into the main text The Episodes of Vathek, scenes omitted from the original edition that had later been published separately. Vathek capitalised on the 18th (and early 19th) century obsession with all things Oriental (see Orientalism), which was inspired by Antoine Galland’s translation of The Arabian Nights (itself re-translated, into English, in 1708). Beckford was also influenced by similar works from the French writer Voltaire. His originality lay in combining the popular Oriental elements with the Gothic stylings of Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto (1764). The result stands alongside Walpole’s novel and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818) in the first rank of early Gothic fiction. William Beckford wrote Vathek in French in 1782, when he was 21. He often stated that Vathek was written as an emotional response to the events that happened at Fonthill at Christmas 1781, and that it took him two days and a night, or |

1801 In Music $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Piano Sonata No. 14 in C minor “Quasi una fantasia”, op. 27, No. 2, by Ludwig van Beethoven, popularly known as the Moonlight Sonata (Mondscheinsonate in German), was completed in 1801. It is rumored to be dedicated to his pupil, 17-year-old Countess Giulietta Guicciardi, with whom Beethoven was, or had been, in love. This was one of Beethoven’s most popular sonatas. The name “Moonlight” Sonata derives from an 1832 description of the first movement by music critic Ludwig Rellstab, who compared it to moonlight shining upon Lake Lucerne. Beethoven included the phrase “Quasi una fantasia” (Italian: Almost a fantasy) in the title partly because the sonata does not follow the traditional movement arrangement of fast-slow–fast. Instead, the Moonlight sonata possesses an end-weighted trajectory; with the rapid music held off until the third movement. To be sure, the deviation from traditional sonata form is intentional. In his analysis of the Moonlight sonata, German critic Paul Bekker states that The opening sonata-allegro movement gave the work a definite character from the beginning… which succeeding movements could supplement but not change. Beethoven rebelled against this determinative quality in the first movement. He wanted a prelude, an introduction, not a proposition. The sonata has three movements: The first movement, in C minor is written in an approximate truncated sonata form. The movement opens with an octave in the left hand and a triplet figuration in the right. A melody that Hector Berlioz called a “lamentation”, mostly by the right hand, is played against an accompanying ostinato triplet rhythm, simultaneously played by the right hand. The movement is played pianissimo or “very quietly”, and the loudest it g… More: |

Excerpt: “Harap Alb” or “Harap-Alb” (Romanian pronunciation: ), known in full as Povestea lui Harap Alb (“The Story of Harap Alb”), is a Romanian-language fairy tale. Based on traditional themes found in Romanian folklore, it was recorded and reworked in 1877 by writer Ion Creang, becoming one of his main contributions to fantasy and Romanian literature. The narrative centers on an eponymous prince traveling into a faraway land whose throne he has inherited, showing him being made into a slave by the treacherous Bald Man and eventually redeeming himself through acts of bravery. The plot introduces intricate symbolism, notably illustrated by the secondary characters. Among these are the helpful and sage old woman Holy Sunday, the tyrannical Red Emperor, and a band of five monstrous characters who provide |

Excerpt: Roy of the Rovers is a British comic strip about the life and exploits of a fictional footballer named Roy Race, which has run in various publications since 1954. The strip gave its name to a weekly (and later monthly) comic magazine, published by IPC and Fleetway from 1976 to 1995, in which it was the main feature. The weekly strip ran from 1954 to 1993 and followed Race’s playing career until its conclusion with his loss of a foot in a helicopter crash. When the monthly comic was launched later that year, the focus switched to his son, Rocky, a player at the same club. This publication was short-lived, and folded after only 19 issues. The adventures of the Race family were featured one final time in short installments in the monthly Match of the Day football magazine, in which father and son were reunited as manager and player. These strips began in 1997 and continued until the magazine’s closure in May 2001. Football-themed stories were a staple of British comics from the 1950s onwards, and Roy of the Rovers was one of the most popular. The stock media phrase “real ‘Roy of the Rovers’ stuff” is… More: |

Excerpt: The Fantastic Four is a fictional superhero team appearing in comic books published by Marvel Comics. The group debuted in The Fantastic Four #1 (November 1961), which helped to usher in a new level of verisimilitude in the medium. The Fantastic Four was the first superhero team created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist and co-plotter Jack Kirby, who developed a collaborative approach to creating comics with this title that they would use from then on. As the first superhero team title produced by Marvel Comics, it formed a cornerstone of the company’s 1960s rise from a small division of a publishing company to a pop-culture conglomerate. The title would go on to showcase the talents of comics creators such as Roy Thomas, John Byrne, Steve Englehart, Walt Simonson, John Buscema, George Perez and Tom DeFalco, and is one of several Marvel titles still in publication since the Silver Age of Comic Books. The character was created by writer-editor Stan Lee and writer-artist Steve Ditko. He first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15 (Aug. 1962). Lee and Ditko conceived of the character as an orphan being raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben, and as a teenager, having to deal with the normal struggles of youth in addition to those of a costumed crime fighter. Spider-Man’s creators gave him super strength and agility, the ability to cling to most surfaces, shoot spider-webs using devices of his own invention which he called “web-shooters,” and react to danger quickly with his “spider-sense”, enabling him to combat his foes. When Spider-Man first appeared in the early 1960s, teenagers in superhero comic books were usually relegated to the role of sidekick to the protagonist. The Spider-Man series broke ground by featuring Peter Parker, a teenage high school student to whose “self-obsessions with rejection, inadequacy, and loneliness” young readers could relate. Unlike previous teen heroes such as James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes and Robin, Spider-Man did not benefit from being the protegé of any adult mentors like Capt… More: |
